Moving Types: It's Not Just A to B
By Service Rank USA Team
When you call for a quote, the first thing a mover will pinpoint is the "type" of move. This isn't just semantics; it determines the laws, insurance, and pricing structure that apply to your relocation.
1. Local Moves
Definition: Typically within the same state and under a certain mileage (often
50-100 miles).
Pricing: Usually hourly. You pay for the number of movers and the time it
takes.
Regulation: Governed by state laws.
2. Intrastate Moves
Definition: Moving longer distances but staying inside the same state
(e.g., Dallas to Houston).
Pricing: Often based on weight or a flat rate, rather than hours, because
travel time is significant.
Regulation: State DOT regulations apply.
3. Interstate Moves (Long Distance)
Definition: Crossing a state line, even if it's just 10 miles. (e.g., New York
City to Jersey City).
Pricing: Strictly based on the weight of your shipment and
the distance traveled.
Regulation: Heavily regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA). Movers must have a USDOT number.
4. International Moves
Definition: Leaving the country.
Complexity: Involves customs, shipping containers (sea or air freight), and
quarantine laws for pets/plants.
Pricing: Based on volume (cubic feet) rather than weight.
